Writing the Wave
A Brooklyn-based charity that does good, and has a good time doing it!

fran_bodyThe numbers, aren’t pretty.  Unemployment in Brooklyn is above the national average, hovering around 11 percent.  One out of every five New Yorkers relies on emergency or supplemental food, to get by during lean times.  But in steps a Brooklyn-based charity whose mission it is to help.  St. John’s Bread and Life gives out over 400,000 meals a year to those in need, serving over a thousand meals each day.  The need is great, and the desire to help is, too.  Last week I had a chance to visit a “friendraiser” Bread and Life was holding at Abigail’s in Brooklyn.  The eatery/wine bar offered community members a chance to mix and mingle, all for a good cause, for an inexpensive $30 bucks.  The evening was an opportunity for people to become educated on Bread and Life’s work, as well as bid on raffle prizes, or, learn about their new logo merchandise for purchase. Some people I spoke with were so impressed by Bread and Life’s “hi-tech” way of helping those in need – by allowing people to “shop” for their needed food items online – they vowed to support the charity for years to come.  Check out the other fundraisers they have planned or how to get involved in other ways at breadandlife.org.
