Church security and why it matters

fran_bigLast month, a priest in New Jersey was killed, allegedly by a custodian who was about to lose his job.  This past weekend, a nun in New Mexico was murdered. Authorities have made an arrest in that case.

As a reporter in various cities like Hartford, Boston, and Philadelphia, over the years I’ve covered several instances where a chalice or other valuable pieces in the vestry were stolen. In a day and age where there’s less money to go around, many churches are electing to close their doors when a Mass isn’t being celebrated.  But locking up isn’t the only answer to securing your church.

I spoke with Jeff Hawkins of the Christian Security Network by phone, to ask him what steps we can all take to increase safety.  He suggested starting a parish security group, which I found interesting – and his website is full of tons of FREE information.  Check it out if you think there are things you can do to help everyone breathe a little easier and facilitate peace at that time – and place – of worship.
