Writing the Wave
Time is running out for TPS
On tonight’s edition of Currents, we see the shift that’s happening in the way New York is assisting Haitians who are still in desperate need of help, even six months after the earthquake. The Assistance Center at the Brooklyn Armory has been closed due to the decline in the number of people going there for assistance. In a release, Governor Paterson said:
Local faith-based and community organizations will continue to provide essential case management services on the ground, and State and City agencies will ensure ongoing information and resources to these groups as they assist those whose lives have been affected by the earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti in January 2010.
Currents visited St. Therese of Lisieux Parish in Flatbush, where Haitians went for support and information about help that’s available.
The deadline to register for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is getting close. TPS allows Haitians who were in the U.S. when or before the earthquake struck their homeland to legally stay and work in the U.S. Follow this link to find out more.
