Football fans across the nation are gearing up to watch our New York Giants take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Kick-off will take place this Sunday February 5th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and you can feel the excitement in the air!

Gisele Bundchen wife of Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady is hoping her husband’s team comes out a winner. According to the New York Post, she’s emailed friends and family asking them to pray hard for Brady to win the championship.

And in Indianapolis, Lucas Oil Stadium is not the only location where important events will play out. One historic church is going all out to make sure the throngs of visitors, fans, and parishioners expected to fill the heart of the city have an opportunity to embrace and celebrate faith amid the Super Bowl festivities.

Our Liz Faublas spoke with the administrator of that Church, Father Rick Nagel of St. John the Evangelist Church in downtown Indianapolis.

The Brooklyn-born Bevilacqua was known here in Brooklyn for his work on behalf of the diverse immigrant community. The son of immigrants, he was the founding director of the Diocese’s migration office. Priests and laypeople are remembering him as a beloved teacher and shepherd. Pope John Paul II appointed Bevilacqua Bishop of Pittsburgh in 1983 and four years later named him Philadelphia’s new Archbishop.

Our Liz Faublas spoke with a man who knew Cardinal Bevilacqua well, Philadelphia native, Currents contributor and author of the blog Whispers In The Loggia, Rocco Palmo.

It’s a day of mourning here in the Diocese of Brooklyn – as one of our own has been called home. Former Philadelphia Archbishop Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua died Tuesday night.

Anthony Bevilacqua was one of eleven children born to Italian immigrants here in Brooklyn. He graduated Cathedral College in 1943 and attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington Long Island before being ordained to the Priesthood in 1949.

Cardinal Bevilacqua had degrees in Canon Law and Civil Law was licensed to practice in New York State, Pennsylvania and the Supreme Court. He taught Canon Law at Immaculate Conception Seminary and Civil Law at St. John’s University.

He was named an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1980. Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Pittsburgh in 1983 and four years later selected him Archbishop of Philadelphia. In 1991, Bevilacqua was elevated to Cardinal.

In a telegram to Philadelphia’s current Archbishop, Charles Chaput, Pope Benedict offered his “heartfelt condolences” to both the Archbishop and Catholics in the Philadelphia Archdiocese. The Pope also expressed his gratitude for Cardinal Bevilacqua’s years of ministry in Philadelphia.

And Cardinal Bevilacqua touched many people here in the Diocese of Brooklyn. He was the founding director of the Diocese’s Migration Office and was known to the many priests and lay people as a beloved shepherd and teacher. Earlier today, our News Director, Ed Wilkinson, had a chance to sit down with a man who worked closely with Cardinal Bevilacqua and knew him well – the Brooklyn Diocese’s Vicar for Migration, Monsignor Ronald Marino.

The calendar may say January but the temperatures, at least today, feel more like spring – a time when we’re likely to see more and more weddings. And there’s no better time to talk about marriage.

According to a recent analysis of census data by the Pew Research Center, only 51 percent of adults in the U.S. are married – a drop of 21 percentage points from 1960. And Pew says if trends continue, the percentage of Americans who are married will soon be less than half.

But for those who decide to take the big step, preparation is very important. We had a chance to hear more about that at a recent talk in Manhattan. There, a man who travels the country talking about marriage shared the church’s teaching on the sacrament of matrimony.

If you’ve been paying even the slightest attention to what’s been going on this Presidential Election year, you know all eyes were on Florida on Tuesday. There, registered Republicans cast their ballots — where former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney appeared to be the front-runner. The most recent Quinnipiac poll of likely Republican primary voters showed Mr. Romney with a 14-point lead over Newt Gingrich.

Meantime, Rick Santorum continued to lose traction as the race became more focused on the competition between Romney and Gingrich – the Quinnipiac poll shows Santorum hovering around 11 percent in Florida.

This setback on the campaign trail has not deterred CatholicVote.org from standing behind the candidate they endorsed earlier this year. Our Liz Faublas spoke with Joshua Mercer, Communications Director for CatholicVote.org about what fuels their continued support of Rick Santorum.

This month, Pope Benedict XVI released his message for the 2012 celebration of World Communications Day—entitled Silence and Word: Path of Evangelization.

Using today’s influx of social media tools as a backdrop, the Pope stressed the importance of virtual sanctuaries that offer silent reflection, thoughtful dialogue and true meaning in life.

Joining us to discuss the Pope’s message of “silence” amid a flood of information and nonstop chatter in today’s media, is Father Robert Barron—Founder of Catholic media ministry WordOnFire.org, which posts daily commentaries, opinions and videos on topic such as this one.

Our Liz Faublas spoke with Father Barron.

It may be a few months away, but Pope Benedict XVI is not wasting any time in getting his message out for World Communications Day. In that message, Benedict says people should be able to use “various types of websites, applications and social networks” – to find time for reflection.

The Pope says that in concise phrases – no longer than a verse from the Bible – “profound thoughts can be communicated.”

And although Catholics have embraced the blogosphere and social media, they are also no strangers to the airwaves. A perfect example – the folks over at Radio Maria – the Spanish-language version of the worldwide network marked 11 years on the air here in New York. They celebrated this past weekend with a Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The Super Bowl is a little more than a week away, and that means next week is “media week,” in Indianapolis, the site of this year’s big game.

But for the Church, the week is special for a different reason – it’s Catholic Schools Week. Each year, a different theme is chosen, and this year, the focus for Catholic Schools week is on three priorities: teaching children the faith, helping them reach their academic potential and instilling a spirit of service.

And, in a week when we heard President Obama’s State of the Union Address, we decided to get an idea of the “State of the Schools” here in the Diocese of Brooklyn. It’s the subject of this week’s “Into The Deep” interview with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, who sat down with our News Director, Ed Wilkinson.

It was a New Year celebration to remember at a Brooklyn Church, and it happened only last weekend. It was the Diocese’s Chinese Catholics who were ringing in the “Year of the Dragon.” According to the Chinese calendar, we are now in the year 4710, and will be through February 9th of next year.

And, Chinese Catholics kicked things off at St. Rosalia Church in Bensonhurst, the site of the diocese’s Asian Pastoral Center. The celebration saw the traditions of the East brought to the heart of Brooklyn. We sent our cameras to check it all out.
