It’s not every day you hear these words: Happy 187th anniversary! No, it’s not a celebration in honor of Methuselah and his wife. Saturday was the 187th anniversary of the church now known as the Cathedral Basilica of St. James. It’s the cathedral for the Diocese of Brooklyn, and as you’re about to hear, a lot of very important events happen there every year.

On a night when we started with a protest over the Empire State Building’s decision to *not honor Mother Teresa’s legacy, we end the show with a celebration of her life and ministry. Back in Brooklyn, we sent our cameras to Regina Pacis Church in Bensonhurst, which was shining brightly, in a much quieter scene to the protest in the city.

Protesting the Empire State Bias – 8/27/10

More than three thousand people took to the streets for a rally, organized by the Catholic League, to protest a decision by the building’s management to *not honor Mother Teresa. The League says the request was first denied without explanation – and when they appealed the decision – was told the building has a policy against honoring religious people and institutions. This despite the fact that Empire State Building has, in the past, honored Cardinal O’Connor, Pope John Paul, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Salvation Army. The rally outside the building brought out diverse group of protesters – and our cameras were there.

Throughout the weekend, Brooklyn Borough Hall will be awash in a sea of blue and white, the colors of the Missionaries of Charity, to honor the 100th anniversary of Mother Teresa, the Missionaries’ founder. And our cameras were there to capture the celebration.
