As we celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to get a full
picture of where Black Catholics have been – and where they’re going.
Along the way, there have been men like Pierre Toussaint – brought
over from Haiti as a slave, he eventually gained freedom and
contributed money to fund the building of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral
in what is today Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood.
There’s also Monsignor Bernard Quinn – the son of Irish immigrants, he built the first parish for Black Catholics in the Brooklyn Diocese.
To find out more about this rich history, we recently sat down with
some leaders in the Black Catholic community in Brooklyn.
