This year’s tornado season has been the deadliest in over six decades. Twisters have killed more than 500 people so far this year.
Officials now say that all of the missing are accounted for and the death toll from last month’s monster storm in Joplin, Missouri stands at 138 people. The tornado leveled more than eight thousand homes and 500 businesses in Joplin. It also destroyed one of the city’s two Catholic parishes, Saint Mary’s. The storm is the deadliest single tornado on record since 1950.
But, Catholics from across the country are reaching out to help – including Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. The organization’s Director of Emergency Management, Susamma Seeley, is in Joplin. She spoke by phone with our Matt McClure.
