While Japan does not make the daily headlines anymore, that does not mean that the nation, and the devastation it suffered after the March 11th magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami have been forgotten. The most powerful quake to hit the country not only left a trail of destruction in its wake, it also thrust the nation into a nuclear crisis – the worse nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

This week, two enterprising eighth graders at St. Joan of Arc School in Jackson Heights put their heads together and got the school’s students to give from their hearts. Their efforts managed to raise *one thousand dollars for the people of Japan. That is already amazing enough, but there is more to this story. A lucky connection at the United Nations brought a special visitor to the school to thank them for their much-appreciated hard work.

* The girls also presented the school’s affiliated parish with a one hundred dollar donation.

I love this school. Blue Ribbon! Very Catholic. Sound education. Good discipline. Wonderful teachers. New principal who cares.
