Jon Kelley

In a regular feature called “Salt Of The Earth,” we’ll be highlighting everyday heroes who use their unique talents to help others. For our first “Salt Of The Earth,” we highlight someone who helped us… someone known to many here at NET and to viewers of the Prayer Channel… Jon Kelley. With his British accent, Jon was probably someone most viewers wouldn’t expect to see or hear on T-V in Brooklyn. But there he was every week, as the long-time co-host of “Tablet Week In Review.” His contribution to the channel was much more that. He served the station as program manager and production director, and hosted our annual telethon. He touched many lives here and throughout Brooklyn and Queens. So as “Currents” completes its first week on the air, we salute one of our own… as the “Salt Of The Earth.”

Hi Currents Team – You all did a great job on this piece – Now even though I never met Jon I feel I know more about him and what a great person and leader he was. Ellen Egerter

Jon, was a strong man who lived and died on his own terms.
It is impossible to pass by 1712 10th avenue and not think of him.

I knew him nearly 20 years and appreciate his candor and guidance.
If you tried and wanted to reach a goal, Jon would help you without ever crushing your morale.

The station was better for his works and character and misses him terribly.

Blaine Hickland captured the essence of Jon. It is hard to watch this segment and not expect to see Jon purchasing set pieces for upcoming shows. I loved working with him on Tablet Week in Review, The Masses and The Eyewitness. I miss this funny, irreverent person more than I realized. From our days of going to work out at Jack LaLannes in Brooklyn, to our Dunkin Donuts pilgrimages from Jon telling me to be a Lamb and fetch him a cup of tea, this guy made you laugh, cry and made you angry. Most importantly, he made you feel. I am so glad we had a last visit earlier this year and we shared some wonderful moments. He had a Vera Lynne book on his coffee table that made me say one last line to him as I was going down his stairs. “We”ll meet again…don’t know where , don’t know when….” I hope it is in heaven.

God Bless you and please look over us in the topsy turvey world.

Jon’s passing was a huge loss for us all. Tragically, I just suffered another devastating passing.
My dad, Alfred, who just retired from Disney in June, passed on August 27th brought on by Lung Cancer. He just found out about the illness a week prior. He was a friend to all and a very knowledgeable person when it came to history, sports, war stories, television and film.
The only thing that keeps us going is the faith that we shall soon be together for all of eternity.
I hope Jon showed him around the place.

We love you dad,

joe

May he rest in peace.

Jon, we miss you very much. You are in our prayers.
But also, Pray for us. Amen.

What a warm and wonderful tribute to a man who truly touched so many lives! It’s hard not to smile when I think of Jon yet the tears flowed at just the sight of him. Everyone at the Prayer Channel, and now the NET, knows how much Jon meant to the station and to each individual involved. You can see it in the moving tributes by his coworkers and friends. In his very last days when I went to visit him, he could barely speak but when he did, it was to make a witty remark and flash his eyes in a conspiratorial smile. For those who knew him, his humor will always remain….for that, I am grateful.

Jon, Times are so tough and we are in for a very cold winter.
It is colder without you my friend.
It would be great to hear that inspirational voice once more.
