Same-sex marriage conscience questions for NY town clerks 7/20/11

The town clerk of Guilderland New York has announced that she will no longer serve as Guilderland’s marriage officer. The decision comes on the heels of the law legalizing same-sex marriage in New York taking effect. Rosemary Centi says her Catholic faith prohibits her from marrying same-sex couples. She says she’ll stay on as town clerk and sign marriage licenses for any eligible couple.
That’s not the case, though for two town clerks in upstate New York. Laura Fotusky, clerk for the town of Barker, and Ruth Sheldon, clerk for the town of Granby, are both stepping down, saying they can not sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples.
Sheldon spoke about her decision by phone with our Matt McClure.
