For Catholics, the month of May can be described as the season of the Virgin Mary. While Mary is celebrated throughout the year, the Church puts special emphasis on the mother of Jesus during the entire month of May. And with May soon to become a distant memory during the hazy days of summer, we decided to take one more look at Mary and the various celebrations that take place to honor her.
This week, the second grade communion class at Immaculate Conception School in Astoria, Queens celebrated their first communion with a unique ceremony. The children brought flowers to Mary in thanksgiving and celebration of their milestone and topped the occasion with the crowning of Mary.
