Till Death – or Alzheimer’s – Do Us Part? 10/04/11

It may be the most famous vow ever taken by a man or woman: “Till death do us part.” But according to one popular preacher, it may be optional. Last month, during an episode of the widely watched program The 700 Club, Televangelist Pat Robertson – who is no stranger to controversial remarks – offered now fiercely debated advice to a man who began dating *another woman because his wife has Alzheimer’s Disease. Robertson recommended that, rather than date other women, the man should divorce his wife.

Not the answer you were expecting, right? Robertson’s recommendation generated an inevitable firestorm of criticism and support. But how would the answer have been different or the same, if you answered it from the Catholic Church’s perspective on marriage? For help answering the vexing question, Currents talked to Father Joseph Gibino, a professor of theology at St. John’s University.
