Today (December 6) was the feast day of Saint Nicholas, popularly known these days as Santa Claus. But, Saint Nick is just one of the *many saints recognized by the Catholic Church. And that begs the question, “just what is a saint, anyway?” And what does it take to become a saint?
We got a taste of that earlier this year when Pope Benedict XVI beatified his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. Beatification is just one step away from sainthood and comes after the Church determines that the person in question interceded in some miraculous occurrence. In John Paul’s case, a nun who had Parkinson’s Disease was cured of it after praying for the late pontiff’s assistance. John Paul needs one more confirmed miracle to be declared a saint.
